Social Communication/Pragmatic Language
The rules for using speech and language in socially appropriate ways is known as pragmatics. Students who speak clearly and who use good vocabulary and grammar may still qualify for speech therapy if they show difficulty in using their language in appropriate ways, such as having difficulty taking turns during conversation, using too formal or too informal wording for situations, or trouble understanding sarcasm/jokes. Pragmatics also includes non-verbal communication, such as eye contact, body language, and tone of voice.
